HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 11 (acn) Yaritza Abel gave Cuba another medal on Saturday during the third day of competitions of the 2010 World Judo Championships, underway at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium of Tokyo, Japan, with the participation of 847 judokas from 111 countries.

Ortiz walked away with one of the bronze medals in the women’s 63-kilo division after she fell in semifinals to Japanese Miki Tanaka but won the bronze-medal bout against Israeli Alice Schlesinger.

On her way to the medal, the Cuban judoka took victories against Hungarian Eszter Gaspar, Portuguese Ana Cachola, Slovenian Urska Zolnir and Israeli Yarden Gerbi.

The other Cuban representative on Saturday, Yurileidis Lupetey (women’s 57 kg), placed fifth after she lost in the bronze-medal bout to Austrian Sabrina Filzmoser.

On Sunday, Cuba will be represented by Dayaris Mestre (women’s 48 kg) and yanet Bermoy (women’s 52 kg).

Japan tops the medal standings of the event with five crowns, two silver and five bronze medals, followed by France (2-0-2) and South Korea (1-0-1). Cuba places 12th with three bronze medals.
