After four days of debates and presentations, the first National Clowns Workshop concluded its sessions, which revealed the plurality of the artistic technique of clowns in Cuba.

On the stage of Las Tunas, about 50 clowns performed acts of juggling, jokes and pantomimes, highlighting the expressive possibilities of this art.

José Meneses Ortega, director of Teatro Garabato of Sancti Spiritus, told the Cuban News Agency that the event's main achievement was to rescue a space for promotion and discussion for groups and artists that assume the work of clowns in the country.

According to Ariel Hernandez, artistic director of the Guerrilla Teatreros of Granma, the presentations and discussions at the workshop also showed that the language of the clown is valid to address any topic or aesthetic of contemporary performing arts.

The works presented by the Guerrilla Teatreros and Garabato Theatre were an example of the aptitude of work of clowns to join other genres such as street theater or adult theatre.

Since Sunday, two institutions and squares in Las Tunas welcomed conferences, book launches and audiovisual displays, with the participation of playwrights from five provinces and personalities such as the National Television Awards winner Nilda Collado.

The second National Clowns Workshop was announced for 2012, also in Las Tunas, when the theoretical section of its program will be strengthened with courses of art history, scenery, makeup and drama.
