Deaths from Hemorrhagic Dengue Reach 57 in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA " At least 57 people have died so far this year in Honduras from hemorrhagic dengue, while more than 50,000 people have contracted the milder classic dengue",  the Health Ministry announced Tuesday.

On Monday, a 21-year-old woman died in the Teaching Hospital in Tegucigalpa, becoming the 57th victim of the at times fatal form of dengue fever, the ministry reported.

The government said that at least 50,028 cases of common dengue and another 5,157 of hemorrhagic dengue have been registered this year, figures that substantially exceed last year’s number of cases of both forms of the disease.

In 2009, there were about 13,000 cases of classic dengue and 438 cases of the hemorrhagic variety" with 12 people from the latter group dying" according to government figures.

Fifty-three percent of the cases of common dengue registered in 2010 have occurred in Tegucigalpa and another 10 percent in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, the country’s business hub.

President Porfirio Lobo’s government declared a state of emergency to deal with the dengue outbreak last month, launching a nationwide campaign involving public and private institutions to attempt to halt the spread of the disease,
which is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. EFE
