HAVANA, The activities, widely aired on state-run media, include book and magazine presentations, concerts, dance shows and theater, excursions, visits to historic sites and summer courses.

One of the main events of the day is the completion of a mural begun Thursday on Havana's famous seafront boulevard, the Malecon.

Also planned is a poetry reading at a downtown Havana fairground, where several national prizes for literature will be awarded.

The day dubbed "Con Fidel y por la Paz" (With Fidel and for Peace) coincides with his birthday, but is meant as support for the mobilization proposed by the ex-president to avoid nuclear war, something Castro says could happen if the United States attacks Iran.

Communist Party daily Granma dedicated most of its Friday edition to Castro,between the publication of his latest Reflections" article and the article on his meeting Thursday with Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba.

On both radio and television, messages of congratulations have been communicated to the "commander in chief," while posters in plazas and shopping malls celebrate his 84 years and wish him many more.

In a public concert Thursday night in Havana, several plastic artists gave Fidel Castro a collective work entitled "Los Dias" (The Days), which was accepted by the secretary of the Union of Young Communists, Liudmila Alamo.
