HAVANA, CUBA.- In support of Cuban leader Fidel Castro’s recent call to avoid a nuclear war, Cuban artists are carrying out this Thursday and Friday a nationwide festival called ‘With Fidel and for Peace’.

 Members of the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), the Hermanos Saiz Association and other youth and student organizations, participate in this event that began today coinciding with International Youth Day.

 In Havana, a series of activities are scheduled for the ’13 de Marzo’ Park in front of the Museum of the Revolution. One of the highlights of the day is a concert that will bring together young artists who will sing to love, peace and life, and also as a present to Commander in Chief Fidel Castro whose 84th birthday is on Friday, August 13.

 In addition, beginning on Thursday and during the weekend, renowned painter Alexis Leyva (Kcho) and the Martha Machado Artistic Brigade will be working on a mural painting near the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Plaza and the Malecon seaside drive. It will be entitled ‘Wall against the War’ and the public will be able to participate.

 
More than 200 children’s choirs will also participate in the festival with performances scheduled for Friday in all the provinces of the country. In Havana, the Avenida concert hall will be inaugurated with a performance by several groups led by the children’s theater company La Colmenita.

 
Also on Friday, at the Pabellon Cuba cultural center, a festival of poetry will take place with the participation of poets such as Carilda Oliver Labra, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, Pablo Armando Fernandez, Cesar Lopez, Nancy Morejon and Miguel Barnet, all winners of the National Literature Award. The literary gathering will close with a concert by troubadour Sara Gonzalez.

The two-day festival ‘With Fidel and for Peace’ will end on Friday night with a concert in front of the University of Havana with the participation of Kelvis Ochoa, David Torrens, Raul Torres and Eduardo Sosa.
