A delegation from Spain's ruling Socialist Workers Party will travel to Cuba on Aug. 31 on a three-day mission to encourage the Cuban government to institute more social reforms, the news agency EFE reported Monday.

The group will be headed by the SWP's organizational secretary, Leire Pajín Iraola, and the party's secretary for international policy, Elena Valenciano.

Both plan to meet with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, leaders of the Cuban Communist Party, and perhaps with Cardinal Jaime Ortega.

Valenciano told EFE that the visit aims to reiterate the Spanish government's expectation on the European Union common position toward Cuba.

The group's intention is "to help impel the reforms that we think Cuba needs," Valenciano said.
