The Cuban Ministry of the Interior said Wednesday that two Cuban security guards seized a boat from the nautical base of Tarara in an attempt to illegally travel to the United States.

Manuel Alexis Ramirez and Eduardo Puig, taking advantage of their jobs as security guards at the facility, seized the vessel "Comodoro" on the evening of July 29, 2010, according to a note published by Granma newspaper today.

The two men's goal was to illegally leave the country for the United States, along with other two citizens, Yusnaykys Hierrezuelo and Karel Gonzalez. In doing so, they used force and damaged resources and facilities.

After an exchange of information between the Cuban Border Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. authorities intercepted the aforementioned citizens and the vessel and returned them to Cuba on August 2, 2010, in compliance with the migratory accords in effect between the two nations.

The appropriate authorities are now investigating the circumstances that brought about the incident, the note said.
