Spanish hotel chain Sol Meliá SA reported net earnings of 13.5 million euro for the first half of 2010, compared to 1.17 million euro in the same period last year.

Sol Meliá is the largest hotel operator in Cuba.

The higher profits came on a 6.6-percent rise of revenues, to 580.9 million euro, despite the disruption of travel earlier this year due to a volcano eruption in Iceland. Per-room revenues rose 11.9 percent.

Although the company gave an optimistic outlook for the remainder of the year, Sol Meliá will continue a “prudent” course of cost cutting it started during the crisis.
