The Cuban government is raising safety requirements for offshore drilling, Basic Industry Minister Yadira García told the national assembly Thursday.

After analyzing the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the government decided it’s necessary to increase “demands” for drilling rig safety, García said.

“In addition, we require quality control of welded parts, and education to become better and more rigorous,” the minister said.

The 12 permanent commissions of the parliament began their work the same day.

García also said the government continues to be “alert” about possible impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil plume. Since the disaster, Cuba has reordered its resources and increased foreign technical assistance, according to García.

“It’s necessary to be on alert,” she said. “For that purpose, the country created a working group made up of the Civil Defense and high-level experts.”
