HAARLEM, Holland (PL).— Cuba retained its position as runner up of the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament by beating Holland 12-5 at the Pim Müeller stadium.

The Cuban team employed a fierce offensive of 12 runs and 14 hits, giving the Europeans their first defeat of the tournament following seven victories.

Alexei Bell, with a single, double, homerun, two RBIs and three runs scored, led the attack by the Cuban team, backed up by Yunier Mendoza (one hit and one two base hit, a couple of RBIs and three runs scored) and Serguei Pérez (three hits and two RBIs).

Donal Duarte, third baseman and also the team’s third in bat, also shone during the game by providing two runs and thus finished the tournament with an average of .452, eight RBIs, 14 hits and four two-base hits.

Left-hander Norberto González won the game thanks to his performance over four innings without permitting a single run and dishing out six strike outs.

The tournament – played as a round-robin contest in which every team plays each other twice – had a worthy victor in the form of Holland, whose team performed excellently and finished with seven victories and just one defeat.

Cuba, who has not won this tournament since 1998, finished with a score sheet of 6-2 and will have to wait two years for another opportunity to win this title.
