Havana, Cuba, Jul 5.- Cuba claimed two impressive victories 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 26-24) and 3-1 (25-19, 25-22. 22-25, 25-16) against host Poland in Lodz over the weekend to remain on top of Pool D of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Men’s World League.

With these two wins, the island’s squad moved closer to the Final Round of the event, scheduled for Argentina, while the European champions saw their chances of qualifying extinguished.

Cuba tops the group with 25 points followed by Germany that improved to 19 units with two 3-1 wins (25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 25-17) and (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19) against Argentina in Berlin over the weekend. Poland ranks third with 15 points while Argentina only has two units but with a berth in the Final Round secured as the host team.

In the final week of the Intercontinental Round, Poland will host Germany in Katowice while Cuba needs only one point when they face Argentina away in Formosa.

In Pool A, Brazil and Bulgaria share the top spot of the group with 25 points apiece and they will fight for the Final Round berth when they face each other next weekend in Varna.

The situation is similar in Pool B with Italy and Serbia —which top the group with 24 units apiece— facing each other in Beograd on Wednesday and Thursday for the ticket to the Final Round.

Finally, in Pool C, Russia tops the group with 26 units followed by the United States with 20 poits. (acn)
