HAVANA, Cuba.- The Australian government extolled Cuba's humanitarian work and reiterated its opposition to the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean island for almost 50 years now.

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith emphasized that his government maintains a stance in favor of the lifting of the criminal blockade against the island, expressed in its successive voting in this regard at the United Nations, the Prensa Latina news agency reports on Thursday.

Officially imposed by the government of US President John F. Kennedy in 1962, Washington's cruel and inhuman blockade against Cuba began practically since the revolutionary triumph of 1959, by way of severe restrictions placed on the Caribbean island.

In a communique on the recent visit of his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez to the Australian city of Perth, on June 7, Smith expressed his appreciation for the cooperation of Cuban health professionals in nations in need, particularly in Haiti.

Rodriguez carried out a two-day visit to Australia after visiting East Timor, where Cuba has voluntary workers in the medical and educational sectors.

The Australian FM highlighted that Havana and Canberra coincided in the possibility of cooperating to improve medical services on the Pacific and Caribbean islands.

He stated that, given Cuba's world credentials in terms of medical training and Australia's experience in the mother-child medical assistance, the two nations have a lot of potential for cooperation.

Smith visited Havana in November, on the first visit of an Australian FM to Cuba since 1995.
