MIAMI (AP) — Yudel Jhonson stopped Brazil's Juliano Ramos in the eighth round of their junior-middleweight fight Friday night.

A 2004 Olympic silver medalist for Cuba, Jhonson dazed Ramos with a left to the head in the final minute of the eighth round. Ramos retreated and Jhonson followed with additional combinations.

Another solid left to Ramos' head forced referee Tellis Assimenios to step between the two fighters and stop the bout at 2:39 of the round.

Johnson is 7-0 with five knockouts since defecting from Cuba in early 2009.

Jhonson stunned Ramos with a left to the head late in the seventh round. Ramos stayed in his tracks and Jhonson followed him with additional combinations.

From the opening round Jhonson landed lefts to Ramos' head but could not fail to follow with additional shots.

Ramos (16-4) withstood every Jhonson shot and seemed headed for a distance-lasting performance until Jhonson unleashed his fight-ending combinations in the eighth.

Jhonson and Ramos both weighed in at 151 pounds.
