South Journal–Chinese boat Ridley Thomas arrived at Santiago de Cuba harbor to boost explorations of Caribbean waters aimed at accurately identifying the route for an underwater optic fiber cable that will link Venezuela and Cuba in order to provide the island with a better Internet Connection through larger band width.

The exploration kicked off last May 5th near the Maiquetia airport, close to the Venezuelan capital and it extended along 5, 340 kilometers through the Caribbean sea up to Siboney beach, a zone near Santiago de Cuba. A second stage of the program includes the exploration of another 200 kilometers to get to Jamaica.

All maps have been drawn up, though crossing points are still to be defined, said the manager of the Geological Projects Company Anthony Pyne in statements quoted by CMKC Radio Revolucion radio station.

The work is hard, but the exploration will tell about the rigor required by the setting up of this cable early next year, said Pyne who has made similar works in Asia and Oceania.

The research is being undertaken in superficial waters by using modern technology, boats and during long working hours, said Waldo Reboredo, who is the vice president of the Gran Caribe Telecommunications Company, the Cuban-Venezuelan entity that will manage the cable.

The setting up of the Venezuela-Cuba-Jamaica optic fiber cable is expected to begin during the first weeks of 2011. The project is considered one of the biggest actions by the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our Americas regional integration project, known by its Spanish acronyms ALBA.

The project, valued at 70 million dollars, was designed to have a 25-year lifetime, while the investment will be compensated according to standards for this kind of initiatives, said Reboredo.

The underwater cable (640-gigabyte capacity) will allow Cuba to multiply by 3 000 times its current speed for data, image and voice transmissions, while the other nations involved will benefit from socially-oriented exchange.

Although the setting up of the underwater cable does not imply the closing of current satellite-based Internet services (the only connection Havana is allowed to have due to the US's hostile Cuba policy) it will help lower operation costs by 25 percent, Reboredo pointed out.

In statements to Radio Nacional de Venezuela radio station, the president of the Gran Caribe Telecommunications Company Wilfredo Morales said that they picked China's Cantel Shangai Bell as the internet cable provider for its strong commitment and credibility and because it is not obliged to abide by the laws of the economic, financial and commercial US blockade of Cuba.
