HAVANA, Cuba, May 10 (acn) Cuban GM Omar Almeida is tied with two other players in the first position of the Salou Open, underway in Spain, where he will face the fourth consecutive Grand Master today.

Almeida, twelfth in the opening standings drew his last game against Ukrainian Sergey Fedorchu and is undefeated in six days, accumulating five points, according to the specialized website ajedrezenmadrid.com.

Fedorchuk, who shows the highest ELO among the participants in this event, also has five points, along with Bulgarian GM Valentín Iotov.

Iotov rose to the second position after beating his Ukrainian counterpart Víctor Moskalenko during the last day.

Eight players followed those three with 4.5 points each, including Fedorchuk's rival today, Azerbaijan's Azer Mirzoev.

The Salou participants, 69, will play nine rounds by the Swiss System. This is the first tournament in the 2010 Catalonia Circuit.

A year ago Almeida was the absolute winner of this circuit to keep Cuba's ruling in it, since in 2008 the winner had been GM Fidel Corrales.
