HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (acn) The 2010 edition of Havana’s Latin American and Caribbean Theater Season, known as Mayo Teatral, began on Friday with an exhibition in this city to pay tribute to the emblematic Peruvian group Yuyachkani, at the Casa de
las Americas cultural institution.

Miguel Rubio, director of this troupe now celebrating its 40th birthday, highlighted its close bonds with the Cuban people and its Revolution, and with this cultural center the group’s artists also consider their home.

He announced for Saturday the preview of a piece especially conceived for the occasion, El ultimo ensayo (The Last Rehearsal), a review of the group’s collective memory of over the past few years.

He also pointed out the coincidence of opening the exhibition at the Manuel Galich Hall, who recalls the renowned Guatemalan intellectual that invited them to Cuba for the first time in 1981.

The exhibition includes photographs of the presentations of Yuyachkani on the island during its numerous visits, posters on its theater pieces, publications, and covers of the Conjunta magazine, especially dedicated to eminent Peruvian artists.

The members of Yuyachkani conceive theater as a political action and as a research on culture; they carry out workshops in marginalized communities, nurture themselves from the rich popular culture and produce texts and publications committed to citizens’ rights.

During his visit to the island in 2001, it received the Gallo de La Habana Prize, the
highest award given by Havana’s Casa de las Americas cultural institution to artistic personalities and groups that have made significant contributions to continental theater.
