RACINE - A group of local activists are planning a study tour to Cuba next year to arm themselves with knowledge.

The trip would be a chance to study Cuba's health care system, the education system, its urban agriculture and more achievements since the Cuban revolution, said Beree Nelson, trip organizer.

The trip, a project of the Racine Coalitionfor Peace and Justice, would be next April for about two weeks.

The group, mostly made up of those who view Cuba favorably, also wants to see an end to the U.S. embargo against Cuba and to see open travel between the two countries. With the severe U.S. travel restrictions to Cuba, the group is in the process of getting a license to go.

Nelson said she's been "pretty fanatical" about the trip, researching about everything to do with Cuba. So much so, in fact, that her cats get upset withall the books strewn about the bed.

After the first time she heard about Cuba, Nelson said she became so interested that she just announced she wanted to go. Thus the trip was born.

Cuba is a country worth studying, said Richard Kinch, a retired professor and treasurer of RCPJ. His interest in Cuba is political. He says he helped found RCPJ in 2002 because he became fearful of the U.S. militarism and the lack of international justice.

The more you learn about Cuba, Kinch said, the more you notice the "irrationality, stupidity and injustice of U.S. policy towards Cuba - trading with them doesn't make you communist."

Nelson agreed, adding the policy really hurts the people, who need the basic supplies and equipment.

So far, organizers have heard from 30 to 40 locals as well as out-of-towners who are interested in the trip. The group is made up of people from all walks of life, including artists, retirees, educators, medical professionals.

Anyone with a serious interest in learning about Cuba is welcome to join the trip. Nelson said it will be more of a study group than "fun in the sun."
