Cuban Theater lovers are anxiously awaiting the new biennial season of Latin American and Caribbean theater to take place throughout the island from May 7th through the 16th, which will include recent creations by twelve troupes coming from Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Cuba that are going for diversity, in terms of language, styles and ways of conceiving the paths of theater in the region.

With the capital and the provinces of Pinar del Río, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and Granma as their venues, the 45 presentations in this May of theater performances include the productions Tres cigarrillos y la última lasaña, by Brazil’s Teatro Promiscuo; Tercer cuerpo, by the Argentinean Timbre 4; La razón blindada, by Sudakaribe (Puerto Rico); Gatomaquia, by the theater company La Cuarta, from Uruguay, groups that will perform on Cuban stages for the first time; and presentations by the renowned Matacandelas, from Colombia; and Yuyachkani, from Peru, which will soon celebrate its 40th birthday.

Meanwhile, Cuba will present the pieces –awarded with the Villanueva Critics Prize- Las amargas lágrimas de Petra Von Kant and ¡Ay, mi amor!, by El Público theater group; La visita de la vieja dama, by Teatro Buendía; and Federico de noche, by Teatro de las Estaciones, and Y sin embargo se mueve, by La Colmenita Children’s Theater Group for children. Cuba’s Contemporary Dance Group and Danzabierta will also offer their art to the public.

The event held in Cuba since 1998 and now in its 8th edition also includes lectures, pedagogical work demonstrations, workshops, film screenings, and the awarding of the emblematic Gallo de La Habana Prize. The award, previously conferred to the theater groups Teatro Escambray, from Cuba; Teatro Circular, from Uruguay; and Teatro Yuyachkani, from Peru, will acknowledge the artistic work of Chicano theater director and expert Luis Valdés, the founder of Teatro Campesino.
