UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon sent a message of support to the People's World Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth underway in Bolivia

The message, read by UN General Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America Alicia Barcenas at the opening day, is an acknowledgement to the right of the indigenous peoples and the social movements to decide on how to defend life and nature, reported Telesur network.

Participants at the event booed the message to express their discontent over the failure of the Copenhagen Summit last December, which was sponsored by the United Nations.

Barcenas said the presence of the UN at this summit is due to their interest into learning about the different positions to have them into account at the time when they set the guidelines for the preservation of the environment.

Bolivian President Evo Morales accused capitalism of predating on the planet in his opening speech, a position supported by all the speakers that followed him in this first day.

The meeting, which runs until Thursday, aims to bring together indigenous and civil society movements, scientists, activists and delegations from all over the world to make governments aware of their plight.

In the framework of this event, the participants, organized in 17 working tables, analize proposals to defend the environment which will be introduced at the next UN Summit which is scheduled to be held in Mexico at the end of the year.
