Excerpts from speech delivered by Raúl Castro in Caracas on Monday, during the ceremony marking the 200th anniversary of Venezuela's independence from Spain.

In its 50 years, the Cuban Revolution has not been and will not be destroyed through blockade, subversion and lies.

 Cuba – like Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ecuador to various degrees – is the preferred target of ferocious and slanderous media campaigns organized and financed by the centers of hegemonic power in the United States, the local oligarchies and, in some cases, the European Union.

Less than a year ago, we saw how a coup d'état was carried out in Honduras, a country that then was a member of ALBA, with the complicity and support of imperialism and its media tools.

Our peoples must learn the lessons derived from those deeds and never allow themselves to be confused by the siren songs to which we are subjected daily, and never to give in to blackmail and pressure.

The experience of the long and painful road traveled in a common history of two centuries teaches us that we have only one alternative: to unite, struggle and win.
