Former world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs took only 28 seconds to knock out Rafael Pedro on Tuesday night.

With the only punch he threw, Briggs stunned Pedro with a right to the head. Pedro, a native of Cuba, fell to the canvas and was counted out by referee Sam Burgos.

"That's all I needed," Briggs said. "It was a fast night for me but that's how a lot of my fights end."

The 38-year-old Briggs (49-5-1, 43 KOs) has now stopped 28 opponents in the first round.

Briggs, of New York, won the WBO crown with a 12th-round technical knockout over Sergei Liakovich in November 2006 but lost the title in his first defence against Sultan Ibragimov eight months later.

Briggs weighed in at 263 pounds. Pedro (20-9-1) weighed 270.
