The Third Pan-American Underwater Sports Championship begins Sunday in Cuba with some 60 athletes competing from Mexico, Colomiba, Ecuador and Cuba.

Dayamí Pérez Fustes, a spokesperson at the Cuban Federation of Underwater Sports, said completion will open with the “Jump Blue” at the Hotel Copacabana in Havana. Afterwards the completion moves to the Baraguá swimming facility in East Havana.

Dayamí Pérez Fustes said that Cuba’s hopes for medals this year lie in breath holders Odaisy Salgado and Lemay Gutiérrez, both national record holders. Colombia is strong in underwater swimming events this year, while Mexico is the country to beat in breath-holding.

Before the competition starts, members will elect the new committee for the Americas of the World Underwater Sports Confederation. Cuban Deborah Andollo is the outgoing president of this committee.
