Cuba defeated Guatemala 3-0 (25-18, 25-12 and 25-8) and faced Puerto Rico this Saturday in semi-finals at the North and Central America (NORCECA) volleyball tournament, qualifier for the 2010 Singapore First Youth Olympics.

This was the third straight victory for the Cuban team in this vent held in Mexico, and they are still to lose a set, after beating the Canadian and US squads 3-0 as well.

The superiority shown by the Cuban team allowed its head coach to give more game time to send to the court his less experienced players and rest for its star Wilfredo Leon in the first two sets.

Denny Hernandez led the Cubans with 9 points, while Romero Dayron scored 8 times. On the Guatemalan side Gerardo Gonzalez made 4.

Cuban head coach Rodolfo Sanchez said he had stressed on his pupils that the game was an important one because it would define the semi-final slots, and shouldn’t be thought to be a training game, despite the obvious level difference over the Guatemalan team.

Sanchez added that “we are in a very good mood, are feeling strong and have won the respect from our rivals” and assured his team will repeat former performances and be on the podium.

Cuba accumulates two medals at this level (Under 19) in NORCECA tournaments, with one gold in 2004 and bronze in 2006, but it hasn’t been able to win a medal at world championships.
