University admissions this year will depend on "the needs of the nation's economy for the formation of professionals," said René Sánchez Díaz, director of Admissions and Placement of the Higher Education Ministry, as quoted by the daily Juventud Rebelde.

"For that reason, the number of openings for farming and technical careers, basic sciences and education is greater than in previous years, accounting for 60 percent of the total" he said.

The number of openings for classes in humanities has been reduced accordingly, the paper said. In total, about 100,000 openings are available.

All applicants for any university opening will have to take tests in mathematics, Spanish and history of Cuba, and pass the tests with no less than 60 points out of 100.

Qualified 11th-graders can go directly to the university if they make a commitment to study careers that the nation needs, such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, agronomy, forestry and agriculture.

The new requirements are in line with the recent emphasis on production-driven education. In a speech to the National Assembly on Aug. 1, 2009, Raúl Castro said:

"We can count on many university graduates in some specialties that are way above the needs, but if we can't change our mentality and create objective and subjective conditions that assure us of the availability of a qualified labor force, who will tend to the fields? Who will work in factories and shops? Who will create the material riches that our people require?"
