The Cuban Court of International Commercial Arbitration reported about promoting collaboration of this kind among the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA).

In a report about its 2009 management, this entity, which is attached to the Cuban Chamber of Commerce (CCC), said it is working on the possible creation of a regional authority to solve controversies, reported Prensa Latina.

The court’s president, Rodolfo Dávalos, said that among other objectives, this entity is aiming at propelling mediation as an alternative tool to solve international commercial conflicts.

It also intends to report on this service through workshops, lectures and training activities so as to give it the recognition the court deserves.

Dávalos considered the work of the court during the previous year as hard and fruitful, despite a number of delayed processes, which should be solved shortly.

The court is an entity to solve conflicts and has become very prestigious and trusted among Cuban business people and lawyers, Dávalos said.

The secretary’s office should work systematically with arbiters and further tighten work relationships, Dávalos added.

According to the document, the number of conflicts solved by the court in 2009 was higher than in 2008. So, the CCC had significant income from arbitration rights.

Unlike the previous years, in which most of the demands didn´t amount to 30,000
dollars, 37 percent of the 2009 conflicts ranged between 200,000 and a million dollars.

This explains the sudden rise in the income from Arbitration Rights, he said.

A relevant aspect here is the increasing number of enterprises and foreign commercial joint ventures as a litigant part in the conflict in front of the Cuban court, which shows the confidence of enterprises on the island and abroad, said Dávalos.

Dávalos announced that Havana will host the First Latin American and Caribbean Congress on International Commercial Arbitration with an aim to tighten the ties between the local courts.

That event will be a step forward to the harmonization of commercial regulations and regional integration.
