Cuban Great Master Lazaro Bruzon will seek his fifth National Champion title at the National Championship in the province of  Ciego de Avila, from January 12 to 24.

Bruzon, World Junior Champion in Armenia in 2000, will have GM Jesús Nogueiras, Walter Arencibia and Reinaldo Vera, also from Cuba, all of them former National Champions, as main rivals.

Nogueiras won the tournaments in 1978, 1984, 1991 and 2000, while Arencibia won in 1986 and 1990.

Vera was National Champion in 1997 and 2001.

If he wins this edition, Bruzon will be the maximum National Championship winner, to beat International Master Eleazar Jimenez (1960, 1961, 1965 and 1967) and GM Silvino Garcia (1968, 1970, 1973 and 1979).

GM Yuniesky Quesada, Neuris Delgado, Fidel Corrales and Holden Hernández will also take part in the tournament, with the participation of 18 players.

GM Leinier Dominguez, now National Champion, will not take part, since there is a FIDE clause preserving owners of 2,650 ELO points or more to be protected.
