Hockey-sports in the province of Ciego de Ávila closed 2009 with favourable results in several collective and individual disciplines both at national and international level.

National prizes in the adult category of hockey, boxing, softball and man basketball place the territory among the most outstanding in the country.

On the list of outstanding athletes are hockey player Heriberto Sarduy, the best scorer; Alain Román, the best softball pitcher, and Dimey Góngora, who won three medals in the tennis championship.

Other sportsmen who showed their potentialities were wrestler Lisney Rodríguez, who attained the fifth position in the world championship of free wrestling in the 120 kilograms division, and cyclists AlienGarcía, Rubén Companioni, Alejandro Mainat and young Ramón Martin.

In spite of not classifying for the triple jump final at the World Cup, jumper Yoandry Betanzos surpassed all his records, in what constituted the best season of his sport career.

For the first time the men baseball selection finished third in national series, it headed all the groups and ratified that it has baseball players of international category, as Vladimir García, Maikel Folch, Yorbis Borroto, Yoelvis Fiss and Adonis García.

The women baseball team also achieved good results in the competitions held during the period, which allowed six of the girls and their director to join the main team for the Pan-American Games.

Once again Ciego de Ávila confirmed its organizational capacity on being the headquarters for international competitions, among them, the Third ALBA Games, of which the territory welcomed the basketball, softball and beach volleyball competition.
