The computation science has remarkable results on the island.

For the first time, a Cuban team advanced to the final stage of the world’s most important programming competition organized by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society.

Jorge Enrique Moreira, Omar Alejandro Mainegra and Julio Cesar Triana, from the Marta Abreu Central University in the province of Villa Clara, will represent Cuba in the World Finals of the contest scheduled for February 2010 in Harbin, China.


These three youngsters, trained by Professor Michel Gonzalez, placed third in the regional stage of the event for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean attended by 160 teams and in which five Cuban teams placed among the top ten.

Seven teams from Brazil, three from Argentina, two from Mexico, one from Venezuela and another from Colombia will also represent Latin American in the World Finals that will coincide with the famous Harbin Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival.

The ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) is organized since the 1970s to foster the development and credit of programming, teamwork and problem-solving skills. The contest also offers a space where students and professors from a
wide range of universities work towards a common constructive goal, out of the traditional university context for examinations, and a space where they can exchange their experiences and knowledge.

In 2008, 7109 teams standing for 1838 universities from 88 nations competed to determine the Programming World Champion Team.

In fact, this achievement has a great significance for the programs being implemented in the branch.
