The Monterey Quartet featuring Dave Holland, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter, and Eric Harland makes its highly anticipated debut at the Festival on Sunday, June 28. This group of all-star jazz heavyweights has some of the greatest virtuosos on the planet. Opening the show is the dynamic Vancouver-based October Trio with Brad Turner. Exploring the boundaries of the saxophone-led trio tradition they create a highly individual language. Adding Canadian trumpeter Brad Turner has upped the ante.
Cuba's greatest jazz legend and one of the world's best piano players hits the stage on Saturday, July 4. The incredible Chucho Valdés and his quintet dazzle audiences with high-octane jazz underpinned with Cuban rhythms. Sharing the bill is British Columbia's own Hugh Fraser Quintet. The trombonist/pianist-led group had The Globe and Mail gushing that this is "bop at its fastest and most furious. The Fraser gang may just be the hottest band in the country.
