UNICEF Highlights Rights of Children in Cuba

Ortiz spoke to children gathered at Expocuba complex, in the outskirts of Havana, during a meeting held in the context of celebrations for World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, to be marked May 17.

The UN official said that Information and Communication Technologies constitute a useful tool around the world, but they also generate risks since many products are not appropriate for children.

“Protecting Children in Cyberspace” was the theme chosen by the International Telecommunications Union to mark the date.

Cuban deputy minister of Informatics and Communications Alberto Rodriguez said that Cuban children and youths can enjoy community educational and social programs of high value.

He also referred to the access by children to IT technologies and knowledge since they are in pre-school years and he underscored the importance of the network of Computer Clubs operating throughout the country.

As part of initiatives relevant to the protection of children on Internet, participants at the gathering presented a videogame on the preservation of the environment. The game was created by eleven year-old Abel Gonzalez Rodriguez with the advice of instructors from the Computer Clubs.
