Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) Reaching Periphery
The plan began in Havana with the setting up of 11 of these mini plants in peripheral communities, but could extend in 2010 to the rest of the country, David Rivera, head of the Department of Critical Events of ETECSA told Prensa Latina.

Through this system the capital would have almost 7,000 more capacities before the end of the year although it is important to increase the fixed network in distant localities with a low population density of about 16 for every 100 homes.

The department head pointed out that these cabinets are designed to operate up to 1,000 lines with a radius of 500 meters, prepared for secure data transmission by being connected to the optic fiber network.

For the director of Development Boost of the company, Leonel Roca, the level of installation in the rest of the country will depend on the economic conditions of the country and the budgets assigned for the task.

It would not be in the same proportions as in the capital, added the official, who thinks an efficient use of resources would be decisive in the development of the expansion plans of the company.

Disregarding the costs of infrastructure, an exterior plant with a network of customers and telephones and each integral cabinet with 400 lines would cost about 40,000 dollars Roca said.

Rivera noted the the centers have Swedish and Chinese technology and as part of a new concept of work the installation time is under two months, as compared to the 5 to 12 it takes for larger plants to be set up.

Also, we count on voluntary work of the population that is the direct beneficiary of this telephone service, he concluded.
