Intellectuals from 30 countries will take part in the XIV Havana International Festival of Poetry, dedicated this year to the people from Middle East and the Maghreb, announced today the organisers.

The meeting, from the 25 and until the 31 of May, will have the presence of Arab writers and the main topic will be: Poetry as a citizen responsibility and The poets and their fight against war.

The World Board of Poets in Defence of Humanity will be held as part of the program, with the assistance of poets from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Syria, Egypt, Mexico, South Africa and Pakistan among many other countries.

The Cuban writer Alex Pausides, president of the organising committee, explained that the event will pay tribute to the prestigious Palestinian poet, Mahmud Darwish, who died last year in the USA and to the Cuban Gabriel de la Concepcion Valdes (Plácido) in the bicentenary of his birth date.

For seven days Cuban and guests poets will share recital, reading and conference spaces.

Cuba will be represented by some of its most important figures such as Carilda Oliver Labra, Miguel Barnet, Pablo Armando Fernandez, Nancy Morejon and Cesar Lopez.

The festival is organised by the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC, after its initials in Spanish), the Office of the Historian of Havana City and the Cuban commission of UNESCO.
