Santiago de Cuba Readies for International Matamoroson Festival
The president of the festival organizing committee, Adalberto Álvarez, announced that added to the traditional outdoor venues at the Carretera del Morro and Calle 3, this year’s festival expands to Calle Martí and San Pedro, Parque Ferreiro, the Teatro Heredia, the Casa de la Trova, the Salón del Son, the Universidad de Oriente and the Escuela de Instructores de Arte.

On April 4, the rueda de casino competition will begin with 50 groups competing in each of the country’s municipalities. Adalberto Álvarez y su Son will play the music for the rueda in Santiago at the Parque Ferreiro.

Among the orchestras playing at this year’s festival are Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco, Elito Revé y su Charangón, Yumurí y sus Hermanos, Original de Manzanillo, Taínos de Mayarí, Son 14 and Estudiantina Invasora.

Along with the concert series and dance competition, the festival features lectures and discussion groups on the influence of son in current Cuban music. Participants will celebrate the 115 anniversary of the birth of Miguel Matamoros and the 70th anniversary of Orquesta Aragón.
