Ruedas de Casino Festival Announced in Cuba
Legendary Cuban sonero Adalberto Alvarez, “the Caballero del Son,” officially opened the Ruedas de Casino Festival on Tuesday in Havana.

"The festival aims to help preserve Cuban culture and identity. Fostering dancing also promotes the music the country produces," said Adalberto Alvarez, honorary president of the competition.

Alvarez also spoke about the importance of the participation of young people, and for casino dancing to remain a daily activity of the population.

This year’s Ruedas de Casino Festival, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Communist Youth League, is also honouring the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution while promoting the preservation of one of the most emblematic dances of the island.

Lisette Ametller Estévez, president of the José Martí Art Instructors Brigade, said that there are teachers and specialists available in the communities to offer instruction to those interested in learning how to dance, and tips for those who wish to improve.

Lisette said that the festival will be held throughout April and May at the community level, in July at the municipal level, and at the provincial level in August.
