 International Book Fair Opens in Pinar del Rio and Villa Clara Cuba
Writer Marilyn Bobes, Casa de las Américas award winner, told JR, in the Milanés theater at the inauguration of the 18th International Book Fair in this province, that women in Cuba had gained the required visibility to leave behind the term feminine literature.

“This term was valid when we were invisible, but not anymore, in the anthology Espacios en la isla (Spaces in the Island) 34 female writers dealing with diverse social topics going beyond feminine philosophy,” noted the writer.

For the people of Pinar del Río the book fair has had a good start with a beautiful show, admission free in the Milanés theatre, with local outstanding artists performing and words by Critics Award winner, Gleyvis Coro.

Gleyvis Coro, Eduardo Martínez Malo and Nelson Simón will be the Pinar del Rio authors to be recognized in this fair.

New titles in Santa Clara

The first day of the 18th International Book Fair in this province was very lively with over 500 new books from different Cuban publishing houses on sale, something unprecedented in Santa Clara.

During the evening were the important Sed de Belleza (Thirst for Beauty) award given to Havana poet, Arnaldo Núñez Viquillón, new book launches and the opening of the photo exhibition to celebrate the 50 years of Casa de las Américas.

Other outstanding activities to be celebrated during the fair are: in the El Mejunje Cultural Center, Las tardes del Sijú Cabezón to emphasize traditional popular culture and to honour 40th anniversary of Signos Magazine, founded by Samuel Feijóo; a youth group meeting at the Arcadas Park, the children’s pavilion Tesoro de Papel with books on sales and the performance of classics for children, and the Para una sonrisa project, at the José Luis Miranda, Children’s Teaching Hospital.
