Cuba Leadership of Nickel Companies Recognized
The Commander René Ramos Latour Factory, located in the Cuban eastern province of Holguín, pioneer in the nickel extraction, celebrated its 65th anniversary with a special congratulation coming from Cuban Basic Industry Minister Yadira García.

The entity, belonging to the Cubaniquel Managerial Group, suffered severe damages due to the effects of Hurricane Ike last September, but it was able to recover in a record time to continue its production.

According to official data, the nickel industry wants to overcome the 70,400 processed tons this year, in spite of the cyclonal havocs and the international financial crisis.

Also, the rate of the nickel fell from 53,000 dollars a ton down to about 9,000, partly because of the descent of the elaboration of stainless steel and cobalt components.

In spite of this, the Ministry of Tourism recognized in a recent information that the nickel industry overcame tourism in economic revenues this year.

The nickel of Cuba - second world reservation, after Canada - is considered Class II, with 90 percent of the mineral.
