Cubas Birth Rate Increases
According to official statistics, the island's birth rate increased 8.8 percent from January to October, accounting for 7,996 more births than during the same period last year.

All 14 provinces reported an increase in the birth rate, especially Guantánamo, Ciego de Avila, Granma and Holguín. The lowest rate was reported in the City of Havana, Pinar del Río and Cienfuegos.

The statistics included the number of births in medical institutions, as well as those that did not take place in health centers.

According to experts, that trend might remain steady until mid 2009, although it is hard to predict what will happen in that regard after that date.
