Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage presided at the opening the 26th Havana International Trade Fair.
Raul de la Nuez, Cuba’s Foreign Trade minister, also present at the inauguration, underscored that this event will enable participants and the host country to complete sales and identify business opportunities in order to raise the living standards of the Cuban people.

Turning to the capitalist economic crisis, De la Nuez warned that the imperialist eagerness to control the world, the wars, the waste, the consumerism and the fundamentalism of the markets is putting the world into a period of instability, with the worst share for the poor.

Despite this world context, Cuba’s foreign trade has grown, while the country is recovering from the battering of the two recent hurricanes, said De la Nuez, and he acknowledged the contribution of entrepreneurs and businessmen for sending donations to the most effected areas.

FIHAV 2008 will run till next Saturday, the only day when it will open to the public. The other days are by invitation to visit the pavilions for specialists and technicians.

Also attending the opening ceremony were Cuban VPs Jose Ramon Fernandez and Ricardo Cabrizas, as well as Cuban Informatics and Communications Minister Ramiro Valdes and Transport Minister Jorge Luis Sierra.
