The project was carried out with a Swiss contribution of 2.2 million dollars in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the government of the Cuban capital.

The facility processes waste, produces methane gas and also residues used as fertilizers in agriculture, besides having a power generator.

According to officials of the UNIDO representation in Cuba, this option using renewable energy is an example of what the island may due with the contribution of UN agencies and donor countries.

The project is also part of the international movement sponsored by that institution in order to promote sustainable and cleaner production.

There are already 45 countries participating in that movement started by UNIDO and Cuba is one of them, with a network established since the year 2000 and about 1,200 national experts trained in actions related to the environment.
