Sugar Production Increases in Cuba
On the international market, the price of sugar shot up from $316 per ton at the end of 2007, to a current world price of nearly $400. Cuba would have had to pay $384 for each ton, including shipping and insurance, while producing it in the country costs only 200 dollars per ton.

So far this year, the Argentina and Ignacio Agramonte sugar processing plants in Camagüey province have yielded more than 51,000 tons of refined sugar.

With the Argentina mill still active, the goal of 40,000 tons of sugar is expected to be achieved by the end of the year at this plant alone; it has already yielded 29,000 tons. Meanwhile, the Ignacio Agramonte plant, which had ceased operations, has been brought back on line to produce 22,000 tons – more than what was expected.

The output of the plants will be used for domestic consumption, with most of this production being distributed through ration cards provided to all Cuban families, and the balance used for making candy, soft drinks and preserves.

With an eye on reducing imports, ten refining plants across the country were reactivated this year: four in Villa Clara, two in Camagüey and one each in the provinces of Ciego de Avila, Granma and Santiago de Cuba.nded the

activity.
