Candidate for Olympic Athletes Commission the Cuban Volleyball Player
The proposal was made to the sports authorities in Beijing in recognition to the athlete's excellent performance.

She has a long record of achievements to her credit including the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympic crowns, as well as an Athens 2004 Olympic bronze medal, and the world and Pan-American titles in 1998 and 2007, respectively. Ruiz has also been honoured by the International Volleyball Federation.

The final members of the commission will be voted in from August 5 to 19 at the Olympic Villa, where more than 10,000 athletes will soon gather.

The IOC's Commission is elected every four years at the venue of the Olympic Games. Cuba was represented before by another volleyball player, Mireya Luis, who was chosen to join the Athletes Commission in Sydney 2000.

Yumilka Ruiz Luaces (30) has been a member of the Cuban volleyball squad for 15 years and she was appointed captain in 2001.

The current president of the Commission is world pole vaulting multiple champion Sergei Bubka, from Russia, elected in Athens 2004.
