Fonte noted that the Cuban producers are well informed about the crisis, which he called a direct consequence of years of capitalist exploitation, together with degradation of the environment and the fevered expansion of biofuel production to fuel the cars in developed nations.
He contrasted Cuban efforts to increase domestic food production and spoke about the new program of direct milk delivery that in each territory guarantees milk supplies to children, sending surpluses to schools and hospitals. He said this program helped reduce powdered milk imports and the amount of fuel used to transport milk.
He added that farmers are also working on the improvement of soils, the obtaining of high quality seeds and the application of sustainable farming techniques.
