In Havana they meet to trade Cuba and Jamaica
In the opening session of the meeting, both officials offered an outlook of the economic situation in each country and the bilateral ties between the two nations.

Lomas recalled that after the re-establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations in 1990, the areas of cooperation have diversified and they now include health, education, tourism, hydraulic resources, agriculture, housing and others.

She also thanked the Jamaican government for condemning the US economic, financial and trade blockade of Cuba.

For his part, Baugh, who is also Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs, insisted on the importance of the political will of governments to develop good relations between neighboring countries.

He explained that during the Sixth Session of the Intergovernmental Commission, scheduled for 2010 in Kingston, the results of the agreements signed will be seen.

There are currently 131 Cuban professionals working in the education and health sectors in Jamaica where they have worked in literacy programs using the Cuban ‘Yo si puedo’ (Yes, I Can) method, and in the Operation Miracle free eye-surgery program with more than 4,000 ophthalmological surgeries.

In addition, nearly 300 Jamaican youths are studying in Cuba, 85 of them in medical schools.
