Cuban Farmers Practicing Ecological Agriculture
The application of these resources, obtained by the farmers from the land itself and at a low cost, helps to raise increasingly healthy crops, while chemical fertilizers hardly have to be used in the fields.

Worm compost "rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and carbon" is among the main natural bio-preparative" used by farmers.

Ricardo Batista, the Holguin representative of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), explained that about 70 percent of farmers in the province have been using natural fertilizers, which have also provided higher yields per hectare.

Other natural fertilizers are also being used in agriculture. One of these is vegetable waste compost, which provides high levels of nutrients for crops and allows harvests to release their toxic elements.

Farmers in the eastern part of the province contribute about 80 percent of the total annual agricultural output of this territory, where its upland areas produce crops such as bananas, cassava, beans, corn and vegetables.
