 In Ciego de Ávila, Cuba Rabbit-Breeding Making Progress
The province, together with Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Havana, bears a leading position regarding meat contributions, decrease of mortality and population growth efficiency.

Ricardo Pérez, Director of the Livestock Enterprise in Ciego de Ávila, expressed that this branch has spread to all the provinces with pure race breeding animals and the practice of genetic improvement.

Between January and last March, over five tons of meat were marketed in the province -- one more than what had been planned-- with individuals of at least two kilograms, he added..
Pérez also said that they are ready to deliver this year over 26 tons of rabbit, which quantity does not meet yet the necessities of the population but surmounts the yearly plans conceived since 2002.

Private breeders have own most of the 4 700 breeding individuals of the province. The animals belong to Cuban brown, California, New Zealand and semi-giant, races, fed with fodder and a protein supplement.

The mortality index in the province is only three percent, while the national mean ranges between five and seven, even though until 10 percent is acceptable.
