Given its high capacity to generate new knowledge and technologies, information is a strategic, maximum priority resource to build an efficient and competitive economy, said Cuban Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment America Santos Monday at the opening of the Info 2008 Congress in Havanas Conventions Center.

Santos recalled that for several years Cuba has been working towards building a true society of knowledge, whose benefits reach all citizens without exclusion of any type. She said such a noble objective is sustained by the educational accomplishments of the revolution and the opportunities of the populations access to the fruits of scientific and technological development.

During the opening ceremony, Brazilian Abel Packer, and Cubans Blanca Patallo and America Santos received special recognition for their contributions to the information sciences.
