The plan for the Havana municipality of San Jose de las Lajas is in the organizational phase that should be completed by April 10, said Matilde Rodriguez Balbier, a veterinarian who heads the new office there.
Eliminating illegalities, training the workers needed and being an example for other municipalities are some of the objectives set forth by Rodriguez and the staff.
One example of how much needs to be done in the future is that San Jose, which is predominantly known for livestock production, has 52,200 hectares of arable land of which only a little over half is farmed efficiently and more than 3,000 hectares are idle.
The local offices of the Ministry of Agriculture will have the authority to make decisions and assume responsibilities in a more dynamic way to implement the farming efforts in their jurisdiction.
