Spanish Hotel Group Barcelo is to increase its presence in Cuba's tourism

Caribbean News adds that recent reports from Barcelo Hotels & Resorts, one of the most important consortiums in Spain, has eyes on Santa Maria Key to develop its Beach Resort option, which has earned well-deserved fame in hotels in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, and plans seven new facilities here by 2010.
Two of those hotels will be built by mixed Hispanic-Cuban companies.
Barcelo Hotels & Resorts Company will open 629 rooms in Cayo Santa Maria this year, another one of 186 rooms in Havana's Monte Barreto area, and a third with 358 rooms in Varadero to be called Barcelo Arenas Blancas.
