On Tuesday, February 26, Havana will see the opening of the 7th Showcase of New Filmmakers
On Tuesday, February 26, Havana will see the opening of one of the most peculiar events of the islands film circuit, the National Showing of New Filmmakers, which seventh edition shows unprecedented figures now: 151 films produced in the whole country to take part in the contest of young new Cuban filmmakers; 12 out of 28 films made by foreign cinema students currently studying in Cuba will open the first announcement of the event "La mirada del otro", as 23 screenplays will seek financing at the contest "Haciendo cine".

Such usual venues as the Charles Chaplin Hall, Infanta multimovie and 23 y 12 movie will screen the films in contest and the collateral shows. This year the event incorporates several second venues in the capital and for the first time two out of Havana: the School of Art Instructors and the Ariza Penitentiary Center, in the province of Cienfuegos.

The official selection for the contest includes 52 documentaries, 32 fiction films and 12 animated films. Organizers have also announced a contest for new designers, which will bring together students from the Higher Institute of Industrial Design (ISDI), who made the posters of the contesting films.

Three special guests will present a cycle of their works: US documentary maker Albert Maysles, Polish director Krzysztof Zanuzzi and Chilean filmmaker Matías Bize.

The Fest will offer a rapprochement to six main figures of the Cuban culture, through the screening of documentaries: "Alejo Carpentier a fondo", by Joaquín Soler; "Dance of my Hearth", on the recently deceased Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso, by Ricardo Acosta; "Él, ustedes, nosotros", dedicated to painter Raúl Martínez, by Léster Hamlet; "Old men Bebo", on pianist Bebo Valdés, by Carlos Carcos; "Leal al tiempo", by Luis Alberto García, focused on the work from city historian Eusebio Leal; and "Sed de mirar", by Esteban Insausti, dedicated to Jorge Herrera.

The Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) will offer its cycle "Cine de la Memoria", that this time will focus on several thematic lines: "Homenaje a Santiago Álvarez"; "Inspiración neorrealista en el documental"; "Polémicos 60"; "Coproducciones en el cine cubano"; "Niños y adolescentes en el documental"; "Recordando a José Limeres" and "Making of".

The international proposals comprise the screening of the works shown in important festivals and films that make up the spreading network of indigenous cinema "Las cámaras de la diversidad", sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Festival will dedicate over 80 hours to debate the films in competition under the title "Moviendo ideas" and will maintain such spaces as "Diálogos intergeneracionales" and "Clases magistrales".

Among the exhibitions highlights go to a photographic one dedicated to Santiago Álvarez and poster showings "Los fabulosos 60" (produced by the ICAIC) and "Ghost Posters" (designed for screenplays never filmed).

And to close the nights, after the screenings the public can participate along with the guest filmmakers in the gatherings at the popular Fresa y Chocolate Café.

The National Showing of New Filmmakers, organized by the ICAIC, is the major showcase of the new cinema that is made on the island. It has been a platform for the presentation of outstanding filmmakers, who are currently among the most recognized in the Cuban cinematographic panorama.
