This program aims to gradually help the more than 774 million unlettered worldwide.
The announcement of this accomplishment was made by the Cuban Minister of Education Luis Ignacio Gomez during the keynote address at the opening session of "University 2008," the sixth International Conference on Higher Education, which is being held at the Havana Convention Center through Friday.
The Cuban minister said that more than a million people have been taught to read and write and the "Yo, si puedo" method, which helps people reach the sixth grade level.
Gomez also announced that Cuba will host the first Latin American Conference of Literacy for Youth and Adults in recognition of its contributions to eliminate this scourge.
In addition, he pointed out that Cuba also cooperates with various educational efforts in Venezuela that are trying to make secondary and pre-university education universal, as well as access to college - which has been successfully implemented in Cuba.
